Corfu, or Kerkira in Greek, is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea. The island's history is laden with battles and conquests, until unification with modern Greece in 1864. The legacy of these struggles is visible in the form of castles punctuating strategic locations across the island. Two of these castles enclose its capital, which is the only city in Greece to be surrounded in such a way.
Apart from the natural beauties of the island, its sandy beaches and fascinating bays with rocky cliffs, the picturesque of the city and villages, in Corfu you can also visit Museums and Byzantine churches, archaeological monuments and Venetian fortresses among others.
The continuation of the folkloric traditions and customs of the island through the many local events and the several art festivals which take place all around the year, is assisted by the preservation of the folklore songs and gastronomical traditions, together with a deep respect for the national and religious symbols.
